Big 5!

I wouldn't go as far as saying we've actively avoided throwing birthday parties, but we haven't had a really compelling reason to do it, either - until this year.  This year, Brennan's actual birthday fell on a Saturday, 2 days before the start of kindergarten - and a bunch of his preschool buddies have had parties this year, so we could no longer deny the existence of such a thing.  In fact, for months, he's been filling our ears with all the things he wanted at his party.
So we booked the party room at the Midtown Terrace Playground, i.e, the location of 50% of the birthday parties we've attended so far, chose "rocket ships" as our party theme (narrowly avoiding monster trucks), and spent several weeks pulling our hair out over how to invite everyone during the summer break, where to get cupcakes, building a spaceship out of cardboard boxes, etc.
We got there bright & early to set up, and I was very impressed how Lucie and the birthday boy played nicely by themselves on the playground so Mommy & Daddy could set out gallons of goldfish crackers and juice pouches.  Daddy might have overdone it at Costco.

Our first guest arrived right at 10am, fresh back from the Big Apple!  Brennan was so happy to see his buddy Enzo, it was like an extra birthday present!  (and big thanks to Adrienne, for playing Power Rangers/Superheroes/Airplanes while we were still setting up)

Ian & Huckle joined in the fun not long after:
The kids briefly enjoyed getting inside the rocket I spent, oh, 3 hours or so constructing.

Luckily, there was more entertainment -
Mr. Funnybone's magic show!
We managed to sell Brennan on the idea that bouncey houses were too noisy and the generator would make a bunch of stinky smoke that was bad for the Earth.  Which may be true, but also his track record with entering bouncey houses at parties is spotty at best, so we were somewhat reluctant to rent one so he could sulk outside of it.

I think he bought it.

...AND, there was balloon twisting!

It was a great party!  We packed up all our stuff, delivered the leftover pizzas & cupcakes to the Animal Hospital That Shall Not Be Named, and moved on to the really exciting part of the day:

opening all the presents!

Mommy & Daddy were allowed about 20 minutes to collapse, and then it was time for dinner, followed by birthday cake.  Bren made his wish -

blew out his candles -

-and dove in, no forks needed.

Lucie really liked the birthday cake, too, and didn't mind one bit that the rich chocolatey frosting made her look like Pennsatucky.

Chicago

We were sad to leave Wisconsin, but Mommy had a conference to get to in Chicago.  We packed up our swank minivan (it had automatic doors and a DVD player) and made it about 30 minutes down the road before Grambo called with an inventory of all the things we'd forgotten.  Oh well.

As excited as I was to walk acres of weirdly carpeted hallway and sit in dark rooms while Scandinavian endocrinologists drone on about fascinating new developments in cat diabetes (spoiler alert: we should be testing more of them for acromegaly!), we made a short detour and stopped in Libertyville for lunch.
Firkin showed us that suburban midwest bar food has really come a long way.  I celebrated my upcoming return to my old stomping grounds with a Bell's Two Hearted IPA.  I can't even tell you the last time I had a Bell's beer.

After battling icky traffic, we made it to our home for the next 4 days:

Mr. Trump's House!
I know, I know - the Donald's hotel?  But it got very positive reviews for being kid-friendly, the rooms are huge with mini-kitchens, and...they were running a deal.
Plus, they left us cookies!

Brennan & Lucie really liked sharing the hide-a-bed, and the Trump-logo plush cows have been in heavy rotation since day one.  Brennan's is named "Moomie", and Lucie's is called "Mooey".

Ganghi & Grandpa Marshall drove over from Michigan to meet us there.  While Mommy went to school, everyone else took in Chicago, including...

the water fountains in Millenium Park!

the iconic Marina City towers -

and riding the brown line back & forth.  Because, well, trains are great.

Mommy left the conference early on Monday (see above re: Scandinavian endocrinologists) and we took the water taxi (after a wee bit of searching for the correct port) to...

Navy Pier!

We rode the giant ferris wheel (minus Daddy, who finds them a little scary) -

despite Bean's blatant disregard for safety.

The merry-go-round was a little more palatable for Daddy.  Also, it was in the shade.

And then we took the water taxi back to Mr. Trump's house.  This was the first time I had ever been on a boat in the Chicago river, despite visiting the city multiple times between 1985-1997, including living there for about a month during an internship.  In my defense, many of those visits were in the months of November to March, when the frozen wind off Lake Michigan carries you into the nearest bar, Garrett's Popcorn shop, etc.

We also enjoyed visiting the fire station, after a delicious lunch at XOCO (the churros were a big hit). Chicago firefighters are just as tolerant of little boys asking a zillion questions as they are in San Francisco.

Then we strolled down Michigan Ave and went shopping at the big Disney Store.  Brennan immediately selected Chug the fuel truck from "Planes".  Lucie, after deliberating for 20-some minutes, and nearly having to leave empty-handed because she kept changing her mind as soon as she got in the checkout line, finally went home with an airplane named Chupacabra, also from "Planes".  He appears to be some sort of Mexican Wrestler airplane.  He even has a cape!

It was our last night - so I guess it had to be Giordano's.  We couldn't leave Chicago without eating deep dish pizza.

Well, except for Brennan.  He had spaghetti & meatballs.  He doesn't like pizza.

Everyone likes dessert, though.

There was time for one more walk in Millenium Park, so Mommy could see the Big Bean, and we could check out the colorful creatures.

We had a fantastic vacation - warm weather, swimming, and grandparents galore!  But we're pretty worn out -

It might be time to go home and get some rest.
